Watercolor Illustration · 2026
A gentle little woodland jackalope tucked among autumn leaves, mushrooms, moss, and berries. This piece was painted as part of my return to regular watercolor practice, with an emphasis on warm seasonal color, soft textures, and storybook atmosphere.
Painted using Holbein Artists’ Watercolors and a deliberately limited autumn palette, allowing the same earthy reds, ochres, greens, and browns to move throughout the fur, foliage, antlers, and forest floor. I kept portions of the background loose and airy so the jackalope could remain the quiet focal point of the piece.
There’s something I love about painting imaginary creatures as though they simply belong in the natural world. She feels less like a fantasy creature and more like someone you might accidentally find guarding a patch of mushrooms in the woods. 🍄
